Retrofit W164 rear LED tail lights with Star diagnosis detail guide

Here is the step-by-step procedure for the Mercedes Benz W164 ML 2009 LED tail light upgrade, including the Star Diagnosis recoding rear SAM procedure.

Mercedes Model: 2006-08 W164 with OEM LED tail light

Tools needed:

8mm wrench

2 needles

SD Connect C4 Star diagnosis in DAS Developer Mode(or with SCN coding)

Second-hand Dell D630 laptop

1 pair of LED tail light, US or Euro specs

ML W164 rear SAM with LED tail light capabilities

Time: the whole procedure takes under 1 hour

Procedure:

Remove rear SAM

1.       Remove cover form load compartment side trim. SAM is located underneath the    fuse and relay box.

2.       remove plastic covering over SAM

3.       remove all electrical connectors

4.       unclip SAM control unit upwards out of retaining clamp

5.       remove connectors to old halogen tail light

Install new rear SAM

1.       Replace old SAM with new SAM, one with LED tail light as option. Known part nos. that work with LED tail lights are 164 900 72 00 and 164 440 41 01.

2.       Reconnect all connectors

Program new rear SAM

1.       Connect MB SD Connect Compact 4 Star diagnosis multiplexer with vehicle

2.       Variant code the rear SAM to LED with the correct setting.

Rewire the brake light wire to tail light connector

For W164 with the brake light socket connected to a set of wires

1.       Detach the red wire from the harness connected to wires to the bulb socket, using thin needle to disengage the locking mechanism from both sides of the metal contact

2.       Insert to the empty port (no.4 maybe) of the central the only harness to the light assembly. You may have to open the clip on the side to allow the metal contact slide into place.

Remove and install tail lights

1.       Unscrew 3 bolts from rear and 2 from side, then carefully slide light backwards (not sideways)

2.       Install new lights in reverse order. Make sure that foam seal is attached to the new lights for weatherproofing.

3.       Now all done and test your tail lights

Benz MB STAR Xentry Diagnosis cannot save Starkey

Starkey Manager error occurred when activating the Mercedes Benz MB STAR (MB SD Connect Compact 4, Super MB Star, Star C3 multiplexer) XENTRY diagnostic software.

Solutions:

1) Incorrect computer time. Set the computer time to current time.

2) Delete “lic-key2.dat file” in Disk C (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\LicDir), re-activate the Star diagnosis XENTRY software

3) Provide the LAN-ID (i.e 0800016096B4) and APP ID to calculate the Xentry key. You should provide HW-ID and APP ID instead. 

4) Provide the wrong HW-ID (i.e. 06EDAFC4E276) or APP ID (i.e 250), so got the invalid activation Starkey correspondingly.

Benz Sprinter PSM online SCN coding with MB STAR diagnosis

If the PSM (Parametric special module) had not been installed in the Mercedes Benz Sprinter vehicle, SCN coding must be performed together with MB STAR diagnostic system.

What's the PSM?
The Parametric Special Module (PSM) is an optional electronic module that is the only approved analog and digital gateway into the vehicle’s electronic system. Since model year 2007 the Sprinter has a fully multiplexed electronic system, networked with several CAN bus systems and the PSM was developed specifically to provide upfitters, fleets and customers’ access to individual types of CAN bus data.

Tool needed:
Mercedes Benz MB STAR diagnostic system (MB SD Connect C4 and Super MB STAR C3 multiplexer)
Online SCN coding software service for Star diagnosis
A laptop that fits MB STAR (O/S according to the HDD type)

NOTE: Our SCN coding can only work on MB SD conect c4 (Item number SP100-D) and Super MB STAR C3 (Item number SP45-B). This one only can be used on 2014.12 or newer star software. Cannot be used on software HDD before 2014.12 version.

Instruction:
PSM SCN coding can be done both online and offline. Here is the online SCN coding guide.

1. Configure MB STAR:
Come to “SDnet Control” menu>> Configuration >>Network: workshop cable network>> Place a checkmark next to “Automatically obtain IP address”

2. To check the active Internet connection, select Star Browser. The registration window for the after-sales platform should open. Enter the Service Name and password if request.

3. Connect MB STAR diagnostic system with vehicle

4. Start STAR DAS software program

5. Select Benz model and make: Vans>>V-Class >>Sprinter>>Model designation>>Vehicle recognition. If the vehicle is not recognized, enter the required data manually (e.g. Germany, Rest of World)

6. Entry for retrofits and modifications – Select “Online” (“networked Star Diagnosis device”)


7. Change or enter the vehicle equipment codes: + ED5 (PSM installed), – ED8 (PSM preinstallation).

NOTE: If the vehicle does not have a preinstallation (ED8), ED8 does not need to be changed to ED5.

8. Run a Quick test

9. Come to the EIS (electronic ignition starter switch) control unit>> Control unit adaptation >>SCN coding >>Select the “Online (networked Star Diagnosis unit)” menu option

10. SCN coding will start automatically (visible on the progress bar on the screen). Please strictly follow the STAR diagnostic software instructions. Otherwise the control unit may be destroyed during the coding procedure.

11. When the system display a comment “The coding variant has been changed”, the SCN coding is completed. The parameterization has been completely taken over in the EIS and is thus finished.

Enabling Interior Rear-view Self-Dimming mirror with Star multiplexer instruction:

In Star DAS Developer Mode:

1. Install and activate MB Star diagnostic software. Software is pre-installed and activated if you get the MB SD Connect C4 multiplexer with Dell D630 laptop bundle package.

2. Run DAS diagnostic software

3. Come to Control units group->F3

4. Select Body control module->F3

5. Select CGW option->F3

6. Select Control unit adaptations->F3

7. Select Read coding and change is necessary->F3

8. Select All codes->F3

9. Change Interior and Exterior mirror dimming to PRESENT

10. Press F3 to save the changes

11. Click F3 to transfer the coding to control unit

12. Click F2 to go back to the CGW section

13. Click F1 to back to the Control unit groups
