How to adjust Benz Engine Cooling Fan with Star Diagnosis

Decrease the Mercedes-Benz Engine Cooling Fan temperature will improve the performance of the air conditioner when idling on very hot days. This can be done via MB Star diagnosis software DAS/Xentry.

Aim:

Setting the Electric Suction Fan (Engine Cooling Fan) to operate at a temperature 10℃ below the MB OEM settings will allow the radiator fan to turn on earlier at a lower temperature to cool the engine and A/C evaporator sooner then standard.

Model tested:

Car W220 S500L 2003

Both W211 and W220 models are tested and maybe relevant to other Mercedes Benz models.

Tools needed:

MB Star diagnosis multiplexer (I am using MB Star C4)

Dell format DAS/XENTRY software HDD

Dell D630 laptop (movable HDD for any laptop with COM-port)

Instructions:

I got the SD C4 MUX with Dell 630 package, software are pre-installed. Directly open STAR XENTRY software.

In STAR Xentry go to “Control Units”

Select “Drive” control unit

Select ME-SFI 2.8-Motor electronics 2.8

Read and accept the “safety notes”

Select “Control unit adaptations”

Select “Correction programming”

Select “Electric suction fan for engine or air conditioning”

Note the existing temperature correction value

Select Button F4/F5 as required to Decrease/Increase the Temperature Correction Value

A positive temperature correction means that the suction fan is switched on sooner by the amount of the correction value.” And the button which is used in Star diagnosis Xentry is “F5: Increase temperature correction value.”

Button F4 decrease the Temperature Correction Value but will not exceed -10℃

Button F5 increase the Temperature Correction Value but will not exceed +10℃

Dell D630 for Star Diagnosis MB SD C4 Customer Feedback

Nowadays, Star diagnosis bundle MB SD Connect Compact 4 & Dell D630 is favored by the Mercedes owners. But there are lots of people puzzled that whether it is necessary to buy Dell laptop D630 for MB SD C4.Last week, we eobdtool customer service have searched a great deal of customer feedback from different forum, and here are some of them.

---With the Dell D630's dedicated serial port, there was no issue for me.... it was plug and play... I just loaded the HDD from the Seller into my Dell and all I needed to do was activate WIS/EPC and XENTRY/DAS with "activation keys"... I only use the Dell for MB Star C4 SD Connect purposes...

---...bought an older Dell D630 with a serial port and plan on buying Star C4 directly installed in a DellD630 hard drive. No Virtual Machine issues.

---Star diagnosis C3 / C4 actually specifies the computer or tablet used in the SDS environment... The T30 is rather slow but will get the job done. If your ever in the market for a faster SDS laptop, the Dell 630 with at least 2Ghz and the speed improvement especially when using Xentry is like night and day.

---I advise buy SD Connect 4 which is connected with LAN cable rather than COM-port as Star C3. And pick up Dell 630 laptop if you are new to Mercedes daignosis, because all latest software (current 2015.7V) are pre-installed.

---the HDD that is pre-loaded with the software for MB SD CONNECT C4 by the Seller, is inserted into the DELL D630... The DELL D630 is the fastest laptop with the RS232 feature.

--- C4 are favorable to get with a pre-installed drive that fits inside a Dell laptop.

Q:I’m very confused, Dell D630 is needed for SD connect C4, but see someone say”The PART W mux(SD connect C4) is and Ethernet/wifi connected system and that is the reason for use on other laptops, that means the SD connect C4 will work with other laptops. Please explain this !

A:Of course you can use SD Connect C4 with other laptop, but both our customer and our engineer have tested no issue with Dell D630. And if you buy the Dell D630 laptop,software pre-installed and activated. Dell D630 is the most safe one. Other laptops you are free to try.

if you buy internal hard drive (HDD),better use D630. If you buy external hard drive, you can use many laptops with COM port

2. The external removable disk can, cpu2.0 more than 2gb memory, high configuration software will run faster, not necessarily with the com interface computer, no com interface can use our computer the so288 adapter [is] to c3. Configuration is too low to run or not run very slow

Star C3 or SD Connect C4, Dell HDD or external HDD?

Mercedes Benz Star diagnosis newbie will always consider these 2 questions:

1) Choose Star C3/C4 or SD Connect 4?

2) Do I need to buy the laptop with the system?

3) Choose External HDD or Internal HDD (T30 or Dell format)?

MB Star C3 or SD Connect C4:

1. MB SD Connect Compact 4 is connected via LAN cable but not COM port as MB Star C3 multiplexer. Most modern laptops have not this COM port; also, used Laptop may have problem on COM port so that you would not communication well.

2. SD Connect C4 works perfect across many different laptops. It's both wireless and LAN. No need for super slow 9pin. And you can also ditch that slow hard drive and put in an SSD. You do have to watch out though. It is able to work on many different laptops (Alienware/Sager/Dell/Toshiba etc). And it's still up and running fine after many years of constant use.

3. MB Star C3/old Star C4 will no longer work on new Mercedes models, but SD Connect will. The SD C4 is more up to date, SD C4 clone is faster.

4. The Star C3 got phased out in either the 3/15 or the 5/15 release. Star C3 multiplexer talks slowly and is error free.

Actually the SD C4 is better.

Do I need to buy the Dell D630 laptop together?

Some customer review will help explain this in depth.

1. Consisting of a dedicated laptop (with pre-installed and software) cables and multiplexer and do not use for anything else then this purpose, I would recommend.

2. I do not need install any software because this package offer includes Dell 630 in which the newest software XENTRY/DAS 2015.7 for MB SD C4 was pre-installed before delivery. When I get the SD C4, I directly use it. No need to activation. Very convenient!

3. I have and it’s worth every penny… just takes some time to get to learn how it works. Don’t get one with virtual image software (external hard drive), get an actual Dell D630 with original HDD and SD C4 unit.

4. Dell D630 laptop has strong compatibility comparing with other laptops. Lots of other clone diagnostic software can be/ or only be loaded on D630 laptop.

Internal hard drive or external hard drive:

What’s the difference between internal and external HDD, check below:

External hard drive features:

1)     If laptop broke, you could just plug it into another machine.

2)     It is a lot slower than running it from disk, because of VMware overhead. If you use it 2 or 3 times a year, a VM solution is perfectly fine.

3)     Hangs off the machine and can be damaged as you move the laptop around. If you pick up the laptop, the USB drive unplugs, then it will fall to the ground and you’re cooked.

Internal Hard drive advantages:

1)     Much faster, if you use it quite a bit then go External hard drive.

2) Internal hard drive has two format T30 for IBM T30 laptop and Dell format for Dell D630 laptop. IBM T30 format is quite old stuff and is out of date.

3)     Internal is so much nicer because now I just have the multiplexer and laptop to carry to the car. Nothing to unplug or fall off.

NOTE:

The MB SD Connect + Dell D630 laptop bundle package comes with newest Dell D630 format HDD.

Either MB Star C3 or SD Connect will do Benz W222 with DoIT protocol.

For some special functions (Smart TAN Code calculation, FDOK Key Calculator, etc), you need to order special software program or get the Super MB Star top version.

We are not trying to persuade you buying these SDS multiplexers, but for education purpose.
